Tympanometry Test – Procedure, Uses and Risks

Tympanometry test price, procedure, uses, and risks by Dr. Shree Rao

INTRODUCTION

Doctors rely on diagnostic tests to assess a disease based on the symptoms and causes. Diagnostic tests help doctors measure the intensity and severity of a disease. Ear, Nose, and Throat are sensitive organs, and doctors rely on diagnostic tests to get a better picture of the functioning of these organs and thereby the underlying problem.
In ENT, doctors use the tympanometry test to evaluate the middle ear or otitis media infection in the ear. In otitis media, the infection in the middle ear can cause damage to the eardrum or tympanic membrane.

WHAT IS TYMPANOMETRY AND WHY IS IT PERFORMED?

Tympanometry test procedure is a painless test to identify the hearing capacity of a person. With this test, doctors measure the middle ear’s functioning and the tympanic membrane. The middle ear is situated at the back of the eardrum or tympanic membrane. Tympanometry observes and records the movement of the tympanic membrane. The recorded data is in a visualised graph called a tympanogram. With this test, doctors identify the hearing capacity and functioning of the eardrum. HOW IS TYMPANOMETRY test is PERFORMED?

The tympanometry test procedure is simple and performed under the supervision of an audiologist. People of all ages can have a tympanometry test performed.

  • Children or adults will sit on a chair, and the audiologist will perform a preliminary examination by observing the ear. If Ear wax or glue is present, the ENT doctor will remove it. In many cases, the test is performed in a closed airtight room.
  • The ear canal is observed using an otoscope, and the audiologist makes sure everything is clear to perform tympanometry.
  • A part of the tympanometer having a small probe-like device with a soft end, is inserted into the ear canal.
  • The soft ends act as a seal, so outer disturbances do not affect the examination. In some people, it may create discomfort, but there is no need to panic as it is a part of the testing process.
  • The probe will create a pressure difference in the ear and emit sound. The audiologist will gradually increase the volume and record the eardrum movements.
  • The data is recorded in a graphical format called a tympanogram. The test is completed in less than 15 minutes.

WHAT IS THE USE OF TYMPANOMETRY TEST?

Tympanometry helps provide better treatment for middle ear infections, thereby preventing hearing impairment in children and adults. With tympanometry results, doctors identify the following –

  • Severity of middle ear infection or otitis media
  • Fluid present in the middle ear
  • Eardrum rupture
  • Hearing capacity
  • Functioning of eardrum
  • Eustachian tube infections

WHAT DOES AN ABNORMAL TYMPANOGRAM INDICATE?

An abnormal tympanogram indicates that there is some kind of problem with the ear, such as fluid in the middle ear, a perforated eardrum, or an ear infection. An abnormal tympanogram will show a peak or flat line on the graph instead of the normal, bell-shaped curve. An abnormal tympanogram may also indicate that the patient has problems with their eustachian tube, which connects the back of the nose and throat to the middle ear. It may also be caused by a buildup of wax in the ear, which can block sound from reaching the ear drum.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH TYMPANOMETRY?

Tympanometry procedure is simple and painless. Test can be performed on 6 month babies to 60 year adults, it doesn’t have any side effects or risks.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUDIOMETRY AND TYMPANOMETRY?

Tympanometry is mainly used to identify the functioning of the eardrum and the middle ear. Audiometry helps in measuring the hearing capacity of a person with an audiometer. Both tests help doctors to identify and diagnose hearing problems in a scientific way.

DO TYMPANOMETRY RESULTS AFFECT MY MEDICATION?

Tympanometry test price varies from place to place depending on various reasons. By examining the tympanometry results doctors will know the extent of infection and functioning of the eardrum. The standard pressure in the middle ear is +50 to -50 decaPascals. If your results are normal then it is clear that there is no fluid build up in the middle ear, pressure in the ear is normal, and that the functioning of the eardrum is good.

If the results are abnormal then you might be suffering from otitis media or middle ear infection and the doctor will prescribe necessary medicines to clear the infection.
