What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a symptom where one feels the sensation of the surroundings spinning or moving around him or her. Its intensity can go from barely perceptible to so high that the person finds it difficult to maintain balance or equilibrium and becomes incapable of performing routine chores. A vertigo attack can last for a few seconds or minutes, or for a few days at a stretch.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF VERTIGO?
Dr. Shree Rao, Ear Surgeon explains that Vertigo can be a result of problems in the inner ear or the brain. These include:
- BPPV – Benign paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in which certain head movements cause giddiness
- MIGRAINES – Severe headaches can trigger Vertigo
- LABYRINTHITIS – This inner ear infection is one of the major and common underlying causes of Vertigo
- VESTIBULAR NEURONITIS – This is the condition where the vestibular nerve – that reaches the inner ear and sends messages to the brain – has inflammation
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF VERTIGO?
Vertigo can be broadly classified into Peripheral Vertigo and Central Vertigo. Peripheral vertigo occurs when there is a problem in the inner ear whereas Central vertigo occurs when there is a problem in the brain.
Peripheral Vertigo
Most of the patients complain of frequent bouts of giddiness. A small percentage of them experience hearing loss, tinnitus, nausea or vomiting.
Depending on the symptoms the patient presents with, Dr. Shree Rao, one of the expert doctors for Vertigo treatment in Hyderabad, first does a general physical examination, followed by a thorough ENT examination. She also checks the functioning of all the cranial nerves and may perform a variety of tests (including the simple otoendoscopy, audiological evaluation and complex ones like Positional tests using Video-nystagmography, Occulomotor examination, caloric tests, Craniocorpography) in order to determine what’s causing the vertigo.
Mainly Dr. Shree Rao, Vertigo treatment specialist in Hyderabad, checks whether vertigo is due to inner ear problems (BPPV), or a more serious condition, such as stroke or brain tumor. She also may advise some radiological investigations like HRCT temporal bone when she suspects middle ear pathology or perilymphatic fistulas. Dr. Shree Rao is the Best Vertigo treatment doctor in Hyderabad and her hospital, Dr. Rao’s ENT is the preferred destination for ENT treatment of all kinds, and Best hospital for Vertigo treatment in Hyderabad.
Gone are the days where the treatment of vertigo included just camouflaging the symptoms rather than treating the root cause. In recent times, the treatment of vertigo has become very specific and targeted. Dr. Shree Rao is one of the top Doctors for Vertigo treatment in Hyderabad and here is what she says/suggests:
- If the person is diagnosed with BPPV, it is better to opt for canalith repositioning maneuvers, where the doctor repositions all the crystals that are freely mobile in the semicircular canals into their original place - the vestibule. After that, Dr. Shree Rao, Vertigo treatment specialist in Hyderabad, may advise some vestibular exercises so that the patient will be free of giddiness later.
- If diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, Dr. Shree Rao prefers to first provide some medical management to reduce the effects. But in case
it is recurring, Dr. Shree Rao may proceed with surgical management which includes decompression of endolymphatic sac which is responsible for giddiness. - Vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis, Ramsayhunt syndrome (herpes zoster infection) issues are usually managed with medical management in the form of antibiotics or anti-viral medications.
- In case the patient is diagnosed with cholesteatoma or perilymphatic fistula, then surgery is the best and only option, clarifies
Dr. Shree Rao, Ear Surgeon, Hyderabad.
It’s important to take the right steps to prevent Peripheral vertigo, even if you’ve already experienced it. Prevention tips include:
- Avoiding trigger foods
- Getting proper sleep
- Following a healthy diet plan
- Avoiding caffeine or gluten-rich foods
- Reducing stress
- Lowering blood pressure if it is very high
It’s also important not to drive when you have Peripheral vertigo, as it may cause dizziness that interferes with the ability to drive safely.
CENTRAL VERTIGO
Central vertigo is the result of a disease or injury to the brain, such as head injuries, illness, infection, multiple sclerosis, migraine, brain tumor, stroke or transient ischemic attacks i.e. mini strokes that last for only a brief period.
Central vertigo lasts for longer periods of time, and is characterized by uncontrolled eye movements that do not allow the patient to focus on a fixed point. Though hearing problems are not associated with Central Vertigo, it can show up as headaches, weakness, or trouble swallowing.
According to Ear Surgeon Dr. Shree Rao, it is of utmost importance to first locate the root cause of Central Vertigo and addressing all treatment options towards resolving it. Where migraines are revealed as the cause, medication and reducing stress levels would be advised. For certain pre-existing conditions such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, or tumors, the treatment may consist of simply managing the symptoms in the best possible manner through medicines for nausea and to help lessen the sensation of movement. Vestibular Rehabilitation Training (VRT) - a series of exercises for people with dizziness and balance problems – has proven as beneficial to patients presenting with vertigo.
